IIT Madras Joins with US Army
Chennai-IIT is conducting new research with the US military.
The IIT research was conducted in collaboration with the US Army and the University of North Texas.
Magnesium in nature is a metal that is less than stable. Research on converting magnesium into a strong, lightweight metal has thus been successful.
Worldwide, heavy amounts of aluminum and steel are used in automotive, rocket and aircraft designs. This increases weight and increases the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from vehicles.
In this situation the weight is low. IIT Madras has succeeded in transforming magnesium into solid metal.
This will enable the vehicle and aircraft to be made lightweight and stable in the future, said Chennai IIT.
A team led by Professor Sushanta Kumar Panigrahi, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Chennai, has been recruited for this research.
